THE PHENOMENOLOGY OF IMPAIRMENT
Abstract: This written research document supports The Phenomenology of Impairment, a mixed media installation consisting of three hundred and sixty-five self-portraits. This work was a part of a phenomenological exercise that combined both art making and writing. Using the five central concepts of the phenomenological method, I was able to uncover a level of meaning in my work that transcended my original intentions. The creation of the work became an enterprise in self-discovery and, through descriptions of my lived experiences and relationships, I was able to uncover the essence of those experiences and relationships.
I've slowly been working on some new pieces. Slowly, because I have been very busy about trying to find jobs. I have an interview tomorrow at a school to teach Middle and High School Art.
I finished this piece about a week ago, but I haven't had a chance to photograph it until today.
It's called "How Does That Make You Feel?" and was inspired by a sheet that my therapist gave to help better identify my emotions. There are 24 panels: 12 that ask the question, and 12 that respond to the question.
I have also started work on a new piece, and hopefully I will have in-progress shots a little later on in the week.
